Adapted Local and Virtual Screenings & Moderated Discussions
Overview
Birthgap Chats⁺ events can be hosted by individuals, organizations, educators, film clubs, and community groups who wish to bring the film and discussion to a local or online audience. Events may be run either online or in person, and adapted to suit a wide range of settings, from classrooms and libraries to community venues and private groups.
To inquire about hosting an event, please contact events@birthgap.org.
Why Host?
People of all ages increasingly want to talk about falling birthrates.
In part, this reflects a shift from the rapidly growing populations many people heard about for decades, to a world where sustained population decline is now the dominant trend across much of the globe.
In part, it is because these changes already affect — or will affect — people’s own lives, families, and future prospects, as well as those of loved ones.
And in part, it is because communities, societies, and even nations are beginning to face demographic stresses that few had anticipated.
By hosting a Birthgap Chats⁺ event, you take on the role of moderator — bringing people together for a structured, informed conversation, either in person or online. Birthgap events are designed to inform, not persuade, and to support thoughtful, respectful discussion.
Event formats
- Virtual events are hosted via Birthgap·org, allowing participants to watch together and take part in live discussion.
- In-person events may be hosted at a venue of your choice. Hosts are responsible for venue booking, setup, and local requirements.
- Events may be run as a single screening or, where appropriate, divided into multiple sessions.
Recommended event structure
For a single-sitting screening of the entire extended Birthgap documentary, we recommend allowing a minimum of three hours to include time for discussion .
- Arrival and settling (≈15 minutes)
- Film screening (≈2 hours) — the extended Birthgap feature documentary (2 hours 15 minutes). A stable internet connection is required.
- Discussion and Q&A (30 to 45 minutes or longer) — guided by the moderator.
For private events, Stephen J. Shaw provides a short pre-recorded video message shown after the film, providing context and closing remarks.
Moderation and guidance
All Birthgap Chats⁺ events are moderated. The moderator may be the host or a designated individual from the organizing group.
Moderators receive access to a short training video covering key dos and don’ts, along with a written moderator guide. The guide includes suggested discussion prompts and guidance for handling more complex questions.
How a Birthgap Chats⁺ Event Works, Step by Step
- After confirming a preferred date and start time, a private Eventive listing is created. This listing is visible only to the organizer and the Birthgap team.
- On the day of the event, playback becomes available for a limited two-hour start window, allowing for minor delays. The film is not accessible outside this window.
- Birthgap prepares a custom on-screen title card shown before playback begins. This may include event text, logos, or branding within reasonable limits.
- When ready, the organizer logs in and presses Play. The film may be paused if required, though uninterrupted viewing is recommended.
- English subtitles are available for all narrative content. Additional language subtitles may be supported in the future.
- After the film ends, the moderator adjusts the room and leads discussion using the moderator guide.
Ticketed Birthgap Chats⁺ events
Locally ticketed events require prior approval from Birthgap·org. Approved events have ticketing set up by the Birthgap team via Eventive.
Ticketing may be configured to reflect the venue layout, including reserved seating where applicable. Eventive can automatically split ticket revenue, paying an agreed portion directly to the moderator or local organizer.
Revenue-share terms are agreed in advance and vary by event type, audience size, and whether the organizer is operating on a non-commercial or commercial basis.
Fees for private, open-door events
Fees apply to one-time private, non-commercial screenings and are based on the licensed audience size. The licensed number of viewers is displayed on the static title screen before playback begins.
Fees and approval requirements vary by event type and setting.
- US$100 — up to 40 viewers
- US$200 — up to 100 viewers
- US$300 — up to 250 viewers
- Additional tiers are available on request.
Fees for corporate screenings or commercially promoted events are provided on request.
All fees are paid by credit card via the Eventive box office. Payment details are included in confirmation emails. Due to limits on simultaneous events, early booking is recommended.
Refunds are considered only in exceptional circumstances.
Educational screenings
For educators screening the Birthgap documentary in a classroom setting, custom, themed shortened versions of the film are available to fit typical class schedules and are provided at no cost. Early booking is recommended due to platform limits on simultaneous events.
Birthgap Chats⁺ screening format options
The Birthgap film may be screened as a single uninterrupted feature or divided into parts to show over several events in sequence. These versions are professionally prepared with natural breaks, openings, and fades.
Birthgap·org does not support the coercive use of its materials. All Birthgap Chats⁺ events must be voluntary, open, and conducted in good faith.
